Ian Marsh

Ian MarshIan Marsh practised law for over 30 years, and was a private client partner with law firms in London and New York for 16 years, before founding familydr Limited in June 2006.

During that period, he acted as trusted adviser to a number of successful families and their business and philanthropic interests. He advised them how to organise, manage and preserve their wealth, and how to resolve issues of governance and succession; he became trustee (or protector) of their family and charitable trusts, and director of their companies; and he was instrumental in resolving a number of complex multi-party, multi-jurisdictional, “family wars”.

Through familydr, Ian now coaches family members in effective communication, negotiation and conflict resolution; facilitates difficult/high emotion family discussions; designs and implements bespoke family governance processes; and acts both as conciliator of family conflicts and as mediator of trust, probate and succession claims and disputes over family businesses.  Ian’s experience includes multi-party and multi-jurisdictional conflicts, with values in issue up to US$200 million.

Ian is member of:

  • The Law Society of England & Wales;
  • The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators;
  • The Association of Contentious Trust & Probate Specialists;
  • The Chartered Institute of Taxation; and
  • The Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners.

He is a member of the Steering Committee of the STEP Mediation Special Interest Group, and is a former member of the Law Society’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.

Ian was trained as a civil and commercial mediator (basic and advanced) by MATA, and is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.  He was trained as a family mediator by the Family Mediators’ Association/ADR Group.

Ian writes and speaks regularly on effective communication, conflict management and dispute resolution, and is the author of the Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution chapter in Business Families and Family Businesses: The STEP Handbook for Advisers published by Globe Business Publishing Limited.
